Names and numbers

Not unusually for the express locomotives of the Western Region of British Rail, all members of the class were named. The names chosen cemented the region's close ties with the Royal Navy. With two exceptions the names applied shortly after arrival from the midland region were not removed until withdrawal.

The names below are the names carried before withdrawal from service. Since then, a number of the class have carried names in tribute to other classmates.
